Multiple Teams · Miners Swimmers Capture Region Titles


On Saturday, January 27th , the Miners ruled the pool in Tooele at the 2018 Region XI Championships. The way the meet works is that each school can have 4 scoring individuals and 1 relay, even though they have more swimmers and relays in each event.
To kick the meet off, Helena Djunic, Jessi Beyer, Katie Hale blasted a new pool record and the fastest time in 4A in the 200 Medley Relay for the win. The boys then had a close race for 2nd , posting their fastest time of the season.

Up next were the 200 Freestyles. Emma Strong-Conklin, Sydney Senn, Daniela Cartwright and Belle Malpede went 1, 2, 4, and 5 for the girls. For the boys Jack Troxel ran down the competition for the win by .14 of a second. Braden Horton finished 5th.

The 200 IM’s proved to be just as exciting as the 200 Free. Jessi Beyer made her move in the back half of the race for the win in a season best time. Jillian Perry, Portia Fernandez and Hali Weaver finished 3rd , 5th and 6th . For the boys, Cole Peterson swam a new personal best time for the win. Fischer Caplin joined him on the podium, finishing in 5th .

The splash and dash, the 50 free, had sophomore Lauren Pederson getting 2nd and securing her trip to the state championships. PCHS senior boys Dennis Djunic and Cai Sharrock finished in 1st and 6th for the medals.

Senior Katie Hale was the next Miner to set a Pratt Aquatic Center record and PCHS Swim Team record with her victory in the 100 Fly. Fellow senior Sabine Caplin was 4th in the event. Trevor Malpede and Dennis Djunic placed 4th and 5th for boys.

Seniors Danielle Jensen and Bella Buchanan went 1st and 3rd for the 100 Freestyles and were joined by Nia Sharrock on the podium who finished in 4th. Sasha Shumilov and Stryder Larson, both freshman, medaled in 3rd and 6th place respectively.

The Miners ruled the distance events, with the girls sweeping the event 1st -3rd. Elise Beller, Sabine Caplin and Sydney Senn had fantastic swims. And continuing with the winning tradition, Jack Troxel earned the win for the boys in a new best time.

The 200 Free Relay again showed the Miners depth as the girls A and B teams of PC placed 1st and 2nd . The boys were 2nd.

In the backstroke, PCHS went 1st,  2nd, 5th, and 6th for the medals for the girls. Cole Peterson, Trevor Malpede and Sasha Shumilov went 1st, 3rd, 5th for the medals for the boys.

The Miner girls put on a breaststroke clinic, going 1st -5th place. Jessi Beyer, Danielle Jensen, Jillian Perry, Ali Kuennen and Nia Sharrock. Senior Mikal Peterson was the lone PC boy on the podium in the 100 Breast.

And the last event of the meet is the 400 Free Relay, which both the PC Girls and Boys won. Katie Hale, Helena Djunic, Emma Strong-Conklin and Elise Beller set a new pool record for the girls, while Dennis Djunic, Jack Troxel and Cole Peterson won the event for the boys by over 8 seconds. Both swims were best times of the season and set them up well for the State Championships in 2 weeks.

Next up for the Miners is the 4A State Swimming Championships being held at the South Davis Recreation Center on Friday-Saturday, February 9th -10th.
